What is CAPRI?

The California Association for Park and Recreation Insurance (CAPRI) is one of the 150 Joint Powers Authorities (JPA) in the State of California. JPA’s were designed and developed to meet the specific needs of the member entities, many of which were formed to provide insurance coverages, risk management safety and loss prevention services. This program of self-insurance is permitted under Government Code Sections 6500 and 990.8. CAPRI provides self-insurance and related services to members of California Association of Recreation and Park Districts (CARPD).

We are comprised of 61 Member Districts with a combined annual contribution in excess of $6 million and an accumulated cash reserve on hand of over $15 million.

Through this program recreation and park agencies are able to pool member contributions and to realize the advantages of self-insurance.

History

Public agencies have had a long history of being subjected to sudden and sweeping market cycles that often left them powerless in purchasing needed coverage for reasonable premiums.

For over 20 years the California Association for Park and Recreation Insurance (CAPRI) has provided a stable market and insurance coverage for risks that are common to Recreation and Park Districts through the most cost-effective, fiscally sound and equitable combination of self-insurance, excess insurance or reinsurance. CAPRI promotes risk management techniques, delivering safety and loss prevention services to our Member Districts.
