About Us

For over 30 years, the California Association for Park and Recreation Indemnity ("CAPRI") has provided a specialized combination of self-insurance, excess insurance, and reinsurance to recreation and parks districts throughout California. Led by an experienced Board of Directors, CAPRI's member-driven philosophy and policy direction reflect the needs of the modern park district.

Moreover, a tradition of sound fiscal management coupled with targeted safety practices specific to the parks and recreation sector have contributed towards CAPRI's healthy financial position and sterling performance record. Together with a committment to providing excellent customer service, these principles have ensured the delivery of cost-effective and comprehensive coverage to all CAPRI members across the State.

Of course, the success of our pool can be attributed to our most valued asset: CAPRI's Member Districts! We know that when our members succeed, we succeed. By deploying well-developed and effective risk management strategies, CAPRI Member Districts are able to offer wide-ranging recreation programs and community services in a safe and responsible manner. Furthermore, the loyalty and committment of our members have ensured pool stability and helped create economies of scale that have allowed CAPRI to leverage the volume we bring to the markets.

History

Public agencies have had a long history of being subjected to sudden and sweeping market trends that often left them powerless in purchasing needed coverage for reasonable premiums.

CAPRI is a Joint Powers Authority ("JPA") formed pursuant to  California Government Code 6500 et seq. JPAs were developed to meet the specific needs of the member entities, many of which were formed to provide insurance coverages, risk management safety and loss prevention services. This program of self-insurance is permitted under Government Code Sections 6500 and 990.8. CAPRI provides self-insurance and related services to members of California Association of Recreation and Park Districts (CARPD).

Through this program recreation and park agencies are able to pool member contributions and to realize the advantages of self-insurance.

If we have learned from history, we know that joint powers authorities (pooling) have been the answer to turbulent markets.  By staying the course, we will all benefit and help weather future volatility.
